Know your worms

Worms Etc raised three composting species in Greer, South Carolina. Each has a job it is best at. These guides cover identification, temperature, feeding, breeding and what each worm is good for, drawn from the farm's own notes.

Eisenia fetida

Red wigglers

The standard composting worm. Small, fast-breeding, forgiving of beginners, and happiest living in a shallow bin of food scraps and bedding.

Eisenia hortensis

European nightcrawlers

A larger cousin of the red wiggler that composts well, tolerates cooler beds, and makes an excellent fishing worm. The worm this farm settled on.

Eudrilus eugeniae

African nightcrawlers

The big, heat-loving tropical composting worm. Produces castings fast and grows to eight inches, but will not tolerate a cold bin.

Looking to buy worms? Worms Etc is not shipping live worms right now while the farm is rebuilt. If you would like to hear when they are available again, email Matthew@wormsetc.com. In the meantime, the beginner's guide will get a bin going with worms from any good supplier.
